Replacement vs. Retrofit Windows: What Are the Differences?

If you’re looking into getting new windows, prospective window contractors may ask you if you’d like retrofit or replacement windows. While the aim is to install new windows, these are two different processes, and knowing the difference between them can help you make informed decisions before signing up with a contractor. In today’s post, home replacement windows company Renewal by Andersen® of Rapid City shares insight on retrofit and replacement windows.

Window Replacement vs. Retrofitting

To understand the differences between the two, let us first take a look at the standard window replacement process. It involves removing the entire window assembly, including the frame that anchors the window to the exterior wall. The opening will be thoroughly inspected, and repaired if needed. A replacement window, which includes a frame that’s sized for the opening, will be installed, sealed at the seams, and covered by trim.

Retrofit windows, on the other hand, are installed within the existing window frame. This means only the sashes and hardware are removed, and the remaining parts are cleaned, sanded and repainted to look like new.

What Makes Window Replacement Better Than Retrofitting?

Whether you’re looking into a whole-home or a single casement window replacement, full window replacement offers several long-term advantages. Firstly, it ensures that any water damage, rot or mold in the wall opening is addressed first, preventing future structural issues. Replacement windows can be built to fit the existing wall opening, helping keep gaps that may affect energy efficiency to a minimum. Lastly, window replacement provides the opportunity to update the style and appearance of your home.

While retrofitting presents an option that requires less labor, perhaps even a lower cost, it does not address problems like hidden damage. Issues that affect structural integrity, such as warping and dry rot, will only get worse over time if left unrepaired. The aging or damaged frames left in place could also fail to support the new inserts adequately over time.
