Casement Windows: Should They Swing In or Out?

Casement windows can contribute to your home’s curb appeal, and people love them because they work well in most architectural styles. They allow fresh air into your living space, help improve ventilation and eliminate excess humid air. Their locking mechanism can also enhance your property’s security.

If you have decided casements are ideal for your home, you must determine which way they will open. Here are factors to consider when making this decision.

Your Dominant Hand

It will be easier to open your casement windows if they crank on the side of your dominant hand. A window with a crank on the right side opens from the right, while one with a crank on the left side opens from the left.

Ventilation

One of the best ways to achieve good passive ventilation is to install casement windows in different areas of your home operating in opposite directions. Considering the location of your windows can encourage cross breeze in your home. To maximize airflow, have your casements cranked at a 40-degree angle.

Aesthetic Appeal

Experts always recommend having the hinged side of casements near the center of the room. Doing so will ensure the windows crank toward the middle of the room, creating a more aesthetically pleasing look.

Two Windows Next to Each Other

Are your casement windows installed next to each other? If so, it’s best to have them operate in opposite directions. The windows will open from the middle, allowing more fresh air to enter and ventilate your living space.
