Renewal by Andersen® Windows vs. Noise

Any homeowner would say that the home is a place where the worries of the world evaporate as soon as you step into it. While many hopeless romantics would say that the home is a person, many still see the home as a building bounded by walls and a roof, and that it should stay immune to whatever the outside world tries to throw at it.

Other than the occasional storm and rain, external noise is one of the main culprits of stress for homeowners. From rambunctious children playing in your neighbor’s backyard to the sound of a backhoe digging up dirt across the street, homeowners sometimes wish their home—by extension their doors and windows—can block noise. This is why in today’s post by Renewal by Andersen® of Rapid City, your door replacement services expert, explains how our products can help you achieve a quiet sanctuary.

The Science Behind Noise Abatement

Renewal by Andersen windows uses our standard High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass. This consists of two panes that sandwich an inert gas between them—typically argon—and vacuum sealed by a stainless steel spacer. This system allows for heat insulation, but what about noise?

Sound, as explained in fourth-grade science, is a type of vibration. This is why our windows use a PVB interlayer, which is made of a material whose density is different from the glass itself. This “cancels” out the vibration from the noise outside, which means the sound that you get inside—if any—is greatly minimized. We use this glass design, whether for windows or French door installation.

Effectiveness Ratings

Don’t take our word for it, though, because independent testing has verified that our windows do abate noise. For example, our 400-series window units have an STC (sound transmission class) rating of 34—standard glass has an STC of 18. Naturally, the higher the STC rating, the better it can block noise.

Renewal by Andersen is the name to look for when you’re searching for windows that not only look good but complete the calm refuge you want for your own home. And we don’t just install windows—we also install the hinged and sliding patio door of your dreams.
