Single- vs. Double-Hung Windows: Which Should You Get?

With all the options available today, choosing windows is more challenging than it seems. You must carefully make this decision because it can either make or break the aesthetic appeal of your home. The right style can beautify, ventilate and brighten up your living space.

You should consider single and double-hung windows if your goal is to improve airflow in your indoor spaces. Here are tips to help you choose between these two popular styles.

Single vs. Double-Hung Windows

Single-Hung Windows

You can usually find single-hung windows in older homes because it’s been used since around the 17th century. They are preferred for restoring historic houses. This window style features a stationary upper sash and an operable lower sash.

Double-Hung Windows

Both of the sashes of double-hung windows are operable. Opening the sashes will allow more fresh air into your indoor spaces. This window style has been growing more popular because of its appeal and ease of maintenance. You will notice that double-hung windows are typically used in modern architecture.

Which One Should You Choose?

While single-hung windows usually come at a lower cost than double-hung windows, they can be challenging to clean. You have to go outside to clean the exterior and inside to clean the interior. Cleaning windows on the first floor is already difficult and even harder on the upper floors. On the other hand, double-hung windows have tilt sashes that let the upper and lower sashes tilt inward. This feature makes cleaning windows on the upper floors easier.

The ideal window style for your humble abode depends on several factors, such as your home’s architectural style. If you need larger units, you will benefit from double-hung windows. More expansive windows will allow more natural light and fresh air into your space. They are also ideal for making your indoor and outdoor areas more connected.
