Hard water stains are unsightly white or grey streaks or spots that show up on your windows’ glass panes. While most things that stick to the glass are easy to wash down, hard water stains can be very difficult to clean. As the leading replacement window contractor, we’re sharing a few helpful tips to get rid of these tough stains.
Before you think about going to the store and buying a cleaning solution, you should consider making your own. A 1:1 mixture of water and vinegar should be enough to get rid of hard water stains. Using specialized cleaning solutions isn’t recommended unless the vinegar mix doesn’t work because they might be too strong and damage the window.
Any window installation company will tell you not to immediately scrub your windows with the solution. Experts suggest soaking a towel in the solution and pressing it on the stains and then letting it sit for a couple of minutes. This will let the solution dissolve the minerals found in the stains.
If you soaked the stains properly, cleaning up the window shouldn’t require any form of pressure. Simply wipe down the window and the stains should come off easily. You may also want to wipe it again with a towel soaked in distilled water for a proper rinse.
Simply leaving the water to dry on its own will likely cause more water spots. Experts on residential window services say you should use a dry rag to clean the window. If you want, you can also follow it up with a window spray to make the glass surface shinier. If you want an easier time with hard stains, our windows have a unique self-cleaning technology that makes hard water stains less likely to form on the surface.
