Why Do Windows Warp?

Windows are vulnerable to a variety of problems due to their continuous exposure to the elements. Warping is one of them and it occurs more frequently in wood and vinyl windows. Understanding what causes warping can help you minimize or avoid this kind of damage to your windows.

In this article, Renewal by Andersen® of Rapid City explains why windows warp and how to solve this problem.

What Causes Your Windows to Warp?

When there is a lot of moisture in the air, wooden windows tend to warp more frequently. When there are different amounts of moisture in different parts of the wood, the windows will also warp. Your window can get bent when different parts of the frame shrink and get deformed.

In the case of vinyl windows, warping is caused by extreme heat. The material can also soften and become malleable if you close the window too tightly and it is exposed to the sun’s heat. The pressure from the locking mechanism at the top and bottom of the window can cause these parts to bend inward. When the material cools and hardens, the window bows in the middle and remains that way.

What Happens if You Have Warped Windows?

Gaps appear between the window sash and frame due to window warping. These openings let heated and cooled air escape while allowing outside temperatures to enter your home. You’ll struggle to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home and spend more money on energy costs in the process. Additionally, windows that are warped are challenging to open and close. Sticking occurs when windows warp, expand and bend to the point where they no longer fit snugly within the opening.

Installing Fibrex windows is one of the best ways to prevent warping.
