Window Styles That Work With the Living Room

Certain window styles lend themselves well to a particular room or part of a house, and sometimes it’s simply because of utilitarian purposes and not just aesthetics. For example, you can’t simply install a casement window where it opens up to limited space or an alleyway, because you couldn’t operate them fully.

For living rooms, particularly, windows that create a lot of space, improve daylighting and encourage ventilation are all great choices. In today’s post, Renewal by Andersen® of Rapid City, the area’s top replacement window contractor, discusses three window styles that work best for this room.

Bay Windows

Bay windows (and their close cousin, bow windows) literally expand space as they reclaim floor space from the wall. As a result, they project outward toward the exterior. Homeowners can then use the extra space for a variety of things, such as window seats or a reading nook.

Any window installation company would say that bay windows are the perfect windows for living rooms. They open up space, and because they involve multiple windows, they also promote enhanced lighting.

Picture Windows

Bay windows can be subdivided into two types—the picture windows form the middle part of the unit, while operable windows (like casement units) flank the inoperable middle one. If you don’t have the space or the budget for a bay window, you can simply use picture windows to obtain the lighting benefit. Note that these cannot be operated, but you can place them strategically, such as overlooking great views or where sunlight could enter them, to get the most out of these windows.

Casement Windows

Another common part of a bay window is the flanking windows, normally an operable one like a casement window. Again, if you don’t have the space or budget, you can just use casement windows by themselves. They’re great for ventilation, and when closed they make a tight seal, making them excellent insulators as well.
